Nationwide workers protest on Sunday for public transports resumption

The Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation has called for nationwide protests on Sunday demanding the resumption of public transport services.

Additionally, they announced that a sit-in will be held in front of the Deputy Commissioners' offices across the country next Tuesday, reports Prothom Alo.

The organisation, in a press conference at National Press Club, demanded that public transports should be allowed for operating immediately leaving half the seats vacant in compliance with the health rules.

Federation leaders said nearly 50% of the transport workers have lost their jobs due to the government-imposed restriction.

Osman Ali, general secretary of the organization, said about 5 million workers depends on the country's transport sector.

"The government has announced a lockdown to save lives. We are not opposed to that. But public movement, labour-intensive industries, markets, educational institutions, courts all was supposed to be closed," he said.

He claimed that the public is forced to use alternative vehicles with extra fare due to restrictions on public transports.

"There is a risk of infection and passengers are being harassed as well," added Osman.
