Mymensingh UP chairman arrested in extortion case

UP Chairman Bhutto looted Tk1 lakh after vandalising Shahab’s house with his associates in July.

A union parishad chairman was arrested in an extortion case in Mymensingh on Wednesday. 

The arrestee is Anisur Rahman Bhutto, chairman of Amirabari union under Trishal upazila.

District detective police and Trishal police station arrested Bhutto from Signboard area after conducting a joint drive. 

Sources said Bhutto demanded Tk3 lakh from Shahab Uddin, resident of Narayanpur village of the same union, to withdraw a case against the former. 

Shahab filed the case under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on 19 May, 2017.  

Later, UP Chairman Bhutto looted Tk1 lakh after vandalising Shahab’s house with his associates in July and threatened that he (Bhutto) would kill Shahab if he did not withdraw the case. 

Police filed a case over this incident after Shahab went to the police station and sought security of his life. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Trishal Police Station Azizur Rahman said Bhutto was arrested in cases filed over extortion, threat and ICT act.
