Abdul Mobarak and Abdul Mabud have been elected president and general secretary respectively in the elections to the Chattogram Samity-Dhaka – a social organisation of Chattogram based in Dhaka.

All the candidates from the Mobarak-Mabud panel have been elected to the executive council of the century-old organisation.

The biennial elections were held yesterday at the Chattogram Bhaban at 32, Topkhana Road in the capital's Purana Paltan area, according to a press release.

From the Mobarak-Mabud panel, Mohammad Naser (Nasir) was elected finance secretary while Advocate Anis-ul Maula (Arju) organising secretary, M Wahid Ullah publicity and publication secretary and Dr Rehena Akter became women and children affairs secretary.

Besides, Shafiqur Rahman Shafiq and Mahmud Salahuddin Chowdhury were elected joint general secretaries.

Among all the executive members, Syed Nurul Islam bagged the highest number of votes as an individual candidate in the elections.

Former secretary to the government Begum Mafruha Sultana played the chief election commissioner. Additional Secretary to the Textiles and Jute ministry Mohammad Abul Kalam and Director (Joint Secretary) of Forest Industries Development Corporation Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin acted as election commissioners.

Established in 1912, Chattogram Samity-Dhaka is a non-political, non-communal and non-controversial social organisation. It has a large number of members in three categories, including life, patron and honorary members.

The organisation's programmes and different activities are executed by three committees: Executive committee, Advisory committee and Trustee Board.

The members for the executive committee are elected after every two years.
