313 Bangladeshis return from Kuwait under amnesty

Some 313 undocumented Bangladeshi workers have returned to Dhaka from Kuwait on Tuesday evening by two separate chartered flights amid the ongoing flight suspension.

"A Kuwait Airways special flight first landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HISA) at 8pm carrying 185 Bangladeshi nationals while another 128 expatriate workers returned from Kuwait by a chartered flight of Jajeera Airways around 10pm last night," said HISA Director Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan.

"After screening all the returnees, they were sent to home quarantine as they did not show any coronavirus symptoms. They also had health certificates from Kuwait", said a duty doctor at HISA.

The returnees had been kept at a detention center in Kuwait after getting a general amnesty there in the wake of deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

Around 4,000 undocumented Bangladeshi were registered under the general amnesty to come back to Bangladesh.

This was the first batch of the deported Bangladeshi workers returning from Kuwait.

The Kuwait government bore the cost of the chartered flights to send back the Bangladeshi nationals.
