MCC releases mosquito larvae-eating fish in drains

The Mymensingh City Corporation has released mosquito larvae-eating fish called Mosquitofish in the city’s drainage system in an effort to halt the spread of dengue infections.

The organic method to eradicate mosquito larvae was launched as part of the ongoing countrywide campaign against the mosquito menace.

Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Professor Dr Lutful Hasan released a batch of Mosquitofish in a ceremony presided over by Mymensingh City Corporation Mayor M Ikramul Haque on Thursday.

Dr Harunur Rashid, professor of fisheries at Bangladesh Agricultural University, said: “Mosquito-eating fish species plays a significant role in eradicating mosquito larvae population in the drains.

“If these fishes are put in all the drains around the country, it will control the mosquito larva in the country.”

He further said: “Many people are being affected by mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and filariasis every year. Many researches show that mosquitofish help eradicate mosquito larvae population in drains.”

Mymensingh City Corporation Mayor Ikramul Haque Titu said: “Gradually more fish will be released in drains across the city throughout the year.”
