Man held over murdering wife for dowry

A man has been accused of murdering his wife after physically assaulting her for dowry at Kalagachia union of Bandar upazila in Narayanganj.

Mostafizur Rahman Nayan, the husband, is facing the accusation of strangling his wife Sumaiya Akhter Barsha, 21, to death on Monday night.

The relatives of the deceased said Sumaiya, elder daughter of Manjur Bhuiyan and a resident of Dhaka’s Donya Shorail area, got married to Nayan, son of Shahidullah Mia of Ali Sahardi area, in 2013.

The couple have a four-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

Sumaiya’s family alleged that about a year ago, her father sold a piece of land and got some money. Upon hearing the news, Nayan demanded Tk5 lakh from his father-in-law using the excuse of doing business.

However, as his demand was not met, he would repeatedly abuse his wife physically. Using this excuse, Nayan beat up Sumaiya again on Monday night, ultimately strangling her to death.

On receiving the news, Bandar police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar General Hospital for autopsy.

Nayan was arrested after the incident.

According to the police, injuries were found on various parts of Sumaiya’s body, including asphyxiation marks on her neck.

A written complaint has been filed by Sumaiya’s family in this connection.

Further legal action will be taken after the autopsy report is published, said police.
