Man held with gold worth TK80 lakh at Dhaka Airport
The jewellery was concealed within crockery items inside shopping bags.
The airport authorities early today detained a man at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport in Dhaka with 6.06kg of gold jewellery worth around Tk80 lakh.
The detainee - Murshed Hossain - was scheduled to board the QR638 flight of Qatar Airways.
Umme Nahid Akhter, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, confirmed the matter.
Acting on a tip-off, the airport authorities issued an alert in the green channel.
After detaining Murshed from the airport's green channel on suspicion, the authorities recovered the cache of jewellery from him around 3am after a thorough search.
He concealed the jewellery within crockery items inside shopping bags.
The gold has since been seized and is being processed under the customs law.
The airport authorities have arrested Murshed and is in the process of handing him over to the police as of filing of this report.
