Man attempts to loot Prime Bank’s Gazipur branch with bomb threat

Police are checking whether any militant organisation is involved with the incident

A man was arrested in Gazipur on Wednesday while trying to rob a bank by threatening to explode a bomb.

The man named Abu Bakar Siddique, 30, arrived at the branch of Prime Bank, located on the second floor of Shapla Mansion in Chandona area of Gazipur City Corporation, with a black school bag around 12:45pm on Wednesday and tried to loot the bank threatening that there were bombs in his bag.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Md Azad Mia and bank manager Farid Ahmed, along with the locals confirmed the matter.

Farid somehow managed to call the police over phone. When police reached the spot, they cordoned off the area including the bank building and surrounding roads. 

Police later arrested the man and seized the Improvised Exclusive Device (IED) bomb, which the Bomb Disposal Team of Dhaka Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) later defused.

Police further said investigation is underway to find out whether any militant organisation is involved with the incident.
