The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a man on charge of spreading a rumour on social media over a missing student of Jagannath University.

Niranjan Baral, 50, who hails from Jhalakathi Sadar, was held from his Rampura residence in Dhaka on Monday.

The CID also took control of Facebook ID of Niranjan and seized other devices.

Later, the CID filed a case against Niranjan with Paltan police station under the Digital Security Act.

On 31 October 2020, the cyber monitoring team of CID came across a Facebook post that claimed that missing Tithi Sarker, a Jagannath University student, was rescued from the CID office in Malibagh with her hands tied up.

However, the CID termed the news as fake and identified Niranjan behind spreading the rumour against them.

Facebook timeline of the accused also showed various other controversial religious and political posts, the CID also said.

Tithi Sarker, a third-year student of zoology at the university, has remained untraced since last week.

The university suspended her on allegation of making derogatory remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad on social media.

As of now, only 9.5m draught vessels could anchor at the port, each carrying 2,500 TEUs. But the 10m draught ship will be able to carry 4,000 TEUs, bumping up the port’s container handling capacity and bringing down costs. The photo was taken recently from the port area.
