Language Movement martyrs paid homage in Jadavpur University

The foreign students in Kolkata's Jadavpur University observed the International Mother Language day today. 

On the occasion, boarders of International Boys Hostel built a temporary Shaheed Minar on the campus and students of different nationals including Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, Somalia and Zambia placed floral wreaths to the monument to pay homage to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.  

They observed the day by placing wreaths, sharing feelings in mother tongue, and singing songs such as "Amar bhaiyer rokte rangano Ekushey February" and "Ami Banglay gaan gai" together.

At the outset of the function, one minute of silence was observed to show profound respect to the memories of the martyrs.

Abhradyuti Das, a Kolkata resident and a post graduate student of Film Studies Department said, "We also observe mother language day in few places of Kolkata. But this time it has some significant values because of the Shaheed Minar built by students."

Tarik Reaz, a Bangladeshi undergraduate student of International Relations Department and an organiser of the event said, "We are glad to take such initiative so that the students here can realize how important our mother tongue is and how Bangali people fought for keeping the language alive."

Around 40 Bangladeshi students are currently studying in Jadavpur University as well as a number of students from other countries are pursuing their higher education in different disciplines.
