KMP additional commissioner withdrawn over 'viral remarks'
The instruction was issued in a letter signed by Additional DIG (Establishment) Raihan Uddin Khan of the Personnel Management-1 Branch of the Police Headquarters yesterday.
Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Additional Commissioner Mohammad Rashidul Islam Khan has been withdrawn apparently after controversy surrounding a viral video clip containing his remarks.
The instruction was issued in a letter signed by Additional DIG (Establishment) Raihan Uddin Khan of the Personnel Management-1 Branch of the Police Headquarters yesterday.
According to the letter, Rashidul Islam Khan has been asked to hand over his responsibilities at his current workplace in KMP and report to the Police Headquarters by today (June 21).
The move came after controversy surrounding remarks made during an interaction with local residents in Mohirbari Khalpar area under Lobonchora Police Station in Khulna city on Tuesday last week.
A 25-second video clip of his comments went viral on social media.
Some part of his remarks sparked controversy and drew criticism.
Asked about the remarks, Additional Commissioner Mohammad Rashidul Islam Khan said they were an unintended "slip of the tongue" made while trying to calm an agitated crowd during a discussion meeting.
"Local residents alleged that information provided to police often gets leaked, putting informants at risk. In that situation, such a statement came out unintentionally. I apologise to any colleagues who were hurt by my remarks," he said.
He added that his intention was to improve public trust in the police and strengthen police-community relations, stressing that criticism arose from a truncated version of his comments.
