Khaleda left to count her last days: BNP 

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, is so ill that she is now left to count her last days of life, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

"Her life is in danger. Accurate diagnosis of the disease she is suffering from is not possible with the technology available in the country. So, the doctors are repeatedly asking us to take her abroad for better treatment at an advanced centre," said the BNP leader while addressing a discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Saturday, marking the 31st death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, a martyr in the 90's anti-autocracy movement.

Mirza Fakhrul said, "We should all know why we are stressing on her medical treatment outside the country. Khaleda Zia's disease is mainly in the stomach. During the last few days, the best doctors in our country have been trying to find out where the bleeding is from. But they are not able to trace the source of bleeding. That is why the doctors have repeatedly said that she needs to be taken to an advanced centre equipped with modern technology to find out the exact source of bleeding. Only then, an attempt can be made to stop the bleeding."

"As part of a premeditated conspiracy, the government has been trying for a long time to remove Khaleda Zia from the politics of Bangladesh, and establish a one-party state. And as a result, she is now counting her last days," he added.

Addressing the government, the BNP secretary general said, "You have forgotten that when Sheikh Hasina was arrested during the army-backed caretaker government, Khaleda Zia issued a statement demanding her release. Today you are pushing a leader towards death who believes in democracy."

Dhaka North BNP Convener Aman Ullah Aman, who presided over the discussion, said, "In jail, Khaleda Zia had been kept in an abandoned building for two years. The government did not allow food from outside.  She used to be served with the jail menu. Her food was poisoned there. She is not allowed to go abroad as the slow poisoning would be unearthed there."

Among others, the discussion was also addressed by BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Khan Dudu, former Chhatra Union President Mostafizur Rahman Babul, and former general secretary of Chhatra Moitree Zahir Uddin Swapan.
