Death toll rises to 13 in Keraniganj factory fire

Two more victims of Keraniganj plastic factory fire have died on Thursday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital raising the death toll to 13.

Eight workers died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical Hospital last night and one died on the spot yesterday.

Dr. Ariful Islam Nobin, resident physician of burn unit in Dhaka Medical College (DMC) confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

Ten more workers are fighting for life at the intensive care unit of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital while eight others are in DMC burn unit.

Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, Chief National Coordinator For Plastic Surgery and All Burn Projects, said "Some of them are 100 percent burnt. I have never seen like this in my life."

A fire broke out at a plastic factory named "Prime Pet and Plastic Industries Ltd." at Hijaltola in Dakkhin Keraniganj upazila's Chunkutiya area on Wednesday.

At least 33 people were taken to the hospital in critical condition after the fire incident.

The families of the deceased people have already been provided with Tk20,000. The government has announced to bear all the expenses of treatment.

Nasrul Hamid Bipu, the lawmaker of Keraniganj, also said on yesterday that the factory was set up without any authorization.

Another fire incident occurred in the factory earlier in February, he said while visiting the injured workers on Wednesday night.
