Jatiya Party fields Kamrul, Saifuddin for Dhaka city polls

The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation will be held on January 30 next year

Jaitya Party on Sunday nominated Brig General (retd) Kamrul Islam and Haji Saifuddin Ahmed Milan as candidates for the upcoming elections to Dhaka north and Dhaka south city corporations respectively.

The party made the announcement after holding a meeting at its Banani office in Dhaka this afternoon, said a press release.

The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation will be held on January 30 next year.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the schedule at his office on December 22. Election commissioners were also present at the programme.

According to the polls schedule, the last date for filing nomination papers is December 31.

The returning officers will scrutinise the nomination papers on January 2, and the last date for withdrawing candidacy is January 9.

The 180-day countdown for the Election Commission to complete elections has already started. Meanwhile, the tenure of the current mayor and councillors of Dhaka North City Corporation will end on May 13, 2020, and the term of Dhaka South City Corporation mayor and councillors will be completed on May 16, 2020.

According to the Election Commission, the two city corporations have over 54 lakh voters — more than 30 lakh in Dhaka north and around 24 lakh in Dhaka south — to cast their votes in the elections.

Along with electing the mayors, Dhaka north voters will elect 54 ward councillors and 18 reserved women councillors while Dhaka south voters will elect 75 ward councillors and 25 reserved women councillors.
