Independent candidate defeats AL candidate in Rangpur

He got 17,260 votes.

Independent candidate Ershadul Haque has won the Haragachh municipality election in Rangpur's Kaunia upazila by a huge margin.

He got 17,260 votes. His nearest opponent Awami League candidate and former Haragachh mayor Hakibur Rahman got 7,173 votes, BNP nominated Monaim Hossain Faruk 4,921 votes and Zahid Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh got 2,205 votes.

Senior District Election and Returning Officer Mohammad Farhad Hossain announced the results of the election on Sunday at 9:30 pm.

On Monday morning, Farhad Hossain said, "Sunday's municipality election was a festive and peaceful one. A free and fair election has been held without any irregularities."

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud said, "The administration has done everything possible to ensure free, fair and peaceful election in Haragachh municipality."
