The police chief urged members of the puja celebration committees to appoint volunteers, install CCTV cameras and fire extinguishers, and use handheld metal detectors while preparing for the largest celebration of the Hindu community

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary has instructed the police officials to ensure full-proof security so that the Hindu minority of Bangladesh can celebrate the Durga Puja peacefully.

The IGP said stern action will be taken against those attempting to incite communal hatred or violence via social media.

Javed Patwary said this while addressing a discussion on law and order at police headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday.

The police chief urged members of the puja celebration committees to appoint volunteers, install CCTV cameras and fire extinguishers, and use handheld metal detectors while preparing for the largest celebration of the Hindu community.

"We need to maintain communal harmony by showing respect to people belonging to different religions," he said, hoping this year's puja celebration would be smooth across the country.

Police headquarters Additional Inspector General (Operations) Sayeed Tariqul Hasan presented the security details at the meeting.

Representatives of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad said they were satisfied with security arrangements. They said the capacity of police has increased and they have proven it while combating militancy and terrorism throughout the country.

"There is a sense of security among people," said the Hindu community leaders.

Hoping for peaceful celebration, the leaders said the puja will be celebrated at around 31,000 mandaps –  temple porches – this year.
