Humayun Ahmed’s 8th death anniversary observed in Gazipur

The eighth death anniversary of prominent novelist, playwright, lyricist, academician and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed is being observed at his final resting place at Nuhash Palli in Gazipur.

Due to the coronavirus situation in the county, the day is being observed on a smaller scale than usual in Gazipur.

Humayun Ahmed's wife Meher Afroz Shawon, his two sons Nishad and Ninit, his father-in-law Engineer Mohammad Ali and a few other family members payed their respects to the great writer by placing wreaths on his grave and prayed for his salvation at 12 noon on Sunday.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of Annanya publications Majharul Islam, Salim Ahmed of Kakoli publications, Actor Sirajul Kabir Komol and other notable personalities along with fans were also present there.

Shawon said, "Every year on this day a Quran recitation is arranged with the orphans of different orphanages. But this year we have done it on a smaller scale than usual."

"On this day, we also arrange meals for the orphans of different madrasas in the area as well as for attending guests, but due to the coronavirus situation none of these were possible."

"The money needed to make these arrangements has been spent to help support 200 middle-class and lower middle-class families whose breadwinners have lost their jobs during the pandemic," added Shawon. 

Shawon also said that a Humayun memorial museum will be built beside his grave here in NuhashPalli.

Curator of Nuhash Palli, Saiful Islam Bulbul said, "The engagement and participation of people in the programmes this year is less compared to that in previous years due to the pandemic."

"Despite the low turnout, fans of Humayun visited the place till dusk today."

Besides Nuhash Palli, programmes have also been arranged at Humayun Ahmed's Shaheed Smrity Bidyapith in Netrokona to mark the occasion," added Bulbul.

Born at Kutubpur village at Kendua in Netrakona to Foyzur Rahman Ahmed and Ayesha Foyez on November 13, 1948, Humayun Ahmed died of colorectal cancer at the age of 63 at Bellevue Hospital in New York on July 19, 2012.
