Hefazat-e-Islam on Sunday announced that it would take legal action against the attack and killing attempt on its Joint Secretary Mamunul Haque by Chhatra League and Juba League activists.

Mawlana Sakhawat Hossain Razi, Hefazat central assistant secretary general, said Mamunul had got married for the second time two years ago in accordance with Shariah and the woman is his family member.

"But he [Mamunul] was attacked yesterday. It was a premeditated attack. Also, his second wife is facing character assassination," Sakhawat said at a meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity.

He further said the statement made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Parliament about Mamunul was not true.

"She [Hasina] made the statement based on misinformation. We hope she will withdraw it," he added.

The Hefazat leader said all the released audio clips regarding Mamunul and his family were fake.

He said Hefazat would take legal action against these.

"We could have protested in public today over yesterday's incident but did not do so because of the Covid-19 situation. If we wished, we could have gathered 500,000 people in Dhaka with a few hours' notice," added Sakhawat.

He also warned that the government would be in trouble should it clashed with Hefazat.
