A Detective Branch (DB) police team has arrested Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury, a central leader of Hefazat-e-Islam and former MP of Sunamganj-3 constituency early Friday.
He was arrested from his residence in Bankalapara of Sylhet city at around 1:15 am, reports Prothom Alo.
Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury was the Central Legal Secretary of the newly dissolved committee of Hefazat-e-Islam and the Central Vice-president of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police BM Ashraf Ullah declined to comment on the arrest.
However, sources in Sylhet Metropolitan Police said that there were several cases against Shahinur, including inciting violence in 2013.
Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury has been arrested in connection with the recent violence and mayhem of Hefazat activists in different parts of the country. However, it was not known in which case he was arrested.
A source confirmed that a team of DB police from Dhaka arrested him and left for Dhaka immediately.
