A woman gave birth to her child on a van at Satkhira Sadar Hospital compound on May 1 as she did not get any treatment in the emergency department.

The woman named Shimuli Rani Das, wife of Bidhan Das, is a resident of Chanka village of Ghona upazila.

The news went viral on social media which created a stir in the health department.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Civil Surgeon Dr Hussain Shafayat said, "A probe committee has been formed immediately consisting of three members who are directed to file a report within seven days. Steps will be taken after the report comes."

Shimuli's mother Ashtumi Rani Das said, "No doctor treated my daughter at emergency department when we took her there. After a while, she got into her labour pain."

"A midwife was with us with whose help she gave birth on a van at the hospital compound. Later we came back to our home," she added.

However, Jahangir Hossain, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital said, "I talked to the in-charge of the emergency department after I came to know the incident. But he denied it."
