Psychiatrists suspend protest programme following Dr Mamun’s bail

The Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists (BAP) has suspended their ongoing protest programme for the time being after a Dhaka court granted bail on Sunday to Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, registrar of the National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (NIMH).
The organisation of psychiatrists made the announcement through a press release signed by BAP President Dr Wajiul Alam Chowdhury and General Secretary Dr Tariqul Alam Sumon.
Dr Abdullah Al Mamun is an accused in a case filed over the death of Assistant Superintendent of Police Anisul Karim.
On 20 November, the court denied bail to Dr Abdullah Al Mamun and ordered him to be sent to jail when he was produced before the court after a two-day remand.
The psychiatrists expressed their displeasure over the incident and held a solidarity rally at the NIMH premises on Saturday (21 November).
Organised by the BAP, all private health institutes in the country were scheduled to go on strike from Tuesday, demanding the release of Dr Abdullah Al Mamun.
