Number of dengue patients exceed 61,000

Since January this year, 61,000 dengue infected patients got admitted to different hospitals across the country amid a volatile dengue outbreak situation with consistent ups and downs in the number of dengue patients over the period.
According to the Health Information and Emergency Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS): 61,038 dengue-infected patients have been admitted to different private and public hospitals across the country to date. Among them, 54,956 returned home after treatment.
According to the DGHS, presently 6,035 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country; 3,411 and 2,624 of these patients are being treated in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country, respectively.
In last 24 hours, 1,446 people have been infected with dengue.
This year, the dengue outbreak began right from the very onset of monsoon. The number of dengue-infected patients at the onset of August exceeded that of the last year.
Dr Mahmudunnabi Tanmoy, assistant registrar at the Department of Medicine of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, said to The Business Standard that days of rainfall that have been few and far between made the dengue outbreak worse this year. Though the number of dengue patients has decreased, it may increase in the absence of continuous rainfall, he added.
Government data confirms 47 deaths from dengue, whereas the private sources claim the number to be as high as 140.
