August dengue cases exceed last 19 years' toll

The total number of dengue-infected patients who have been in hospitals across the country in thirty days of August of this year has surpassed the total number of dengue-infected patients admitted in hospitals in the last 19 years, from the year 2000 to 2018.
According to the government records, over the 19-year period 50,148 dengue patients were treated in hospitals across the country; while for the period from August 1 to August 30 of this year, the number stands at 50,974.
According to the Health Information and Emergency Control Room at the Directorate General for Health Services (DGHS), so far 69,435 dengue infected patients got admitted to different private and public hospitals in the country, of which, 64,558 or 93 percent returned home after receiving treatment.
The health directorate said, at present around 4,697 patients are taking treatment at hospitals throughout the country. Among them, 2,610 are admitted to 41 public and private hospitals in Dhaka, and 2,087 are elsewhere in the country.
In the last 24 hours, 1,025 new people have been infected with dengue.
This year, Dhaka witnessed dengue infection at the very onset of the rainy season, and consequently, the number of infections in August this year has already exceeded the whole number of dengue patients last year. Last year, it was 10,148 with 26 deaths.
According to the experts, the dengue infection may increase in September and October due to weather conditions which is suitable for Aedes mosquitoes to breed.
The DGHS informed, the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has so far reviewed 88 deaths and confirmed that 52 died of dengue. The IEDCR has so far received information about 180 deaths.
In Bangladesh, dengue infection was first identified in 2000 when at least 93 people died and 5,551 were hospitalized.
Woman died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital
Mini Begum, 52, from Kholamuda area at Keraniganj, died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) at 8:30 in the morning on Friday. She was the wife of Ashraf Ali Bapari.
She was suffering from fever for nine days. She was admitted to DMCH on Wednesday.
