HC asks for GBX Logistics’ tax documents

The High Court (HC) has asked for all income tax related documents of the Bangladeshi freight forwarding company GBX Logistics Ltd.

A HC bench comprising of justices Farah Mahbub and SM Moniruzzaman issued the order on Thursday after hearing a writ petition.

The bench also asked the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to file the documents at court by October 14.

The petition was filed by advocate Monzur Nahid.  Barrister Anik R Haque represented the writ petitioner.

Earlier on August 5, a report was published in a national daily that said that the NBR is waiting to collect a Tk56 crore income tax claim. According to the report, the company had shown revenue of Tk 12 crore 12 lakh and they deposited around Tk 61 lakh in tax.

NBR became suspicious about the matter, and on investigation found that the company made a revenue of Tk 366 crore 6 lakh 43 thousand. The tax amount for this would be Tk 56 crore 43 lakh 80 thousand.

GBX Logistics Ltd books cargo space on ships and airlines to transport goods to or from different importers and exporters abroad for which they receive commission.

In the 2015-16 fiscal year, the company deposited Tk 61 lakh in source tax against the commission received from Orient Express Line and Hapag Lloyd.

The NBR's Central Intelligence Cell carried out a detailed investigation and found that GBX Logistics Ltd has a total of six accounts in various banks. The total amount of commission in the company's accounts during that time was Tk 161 crore 25 lakh 16 thousand 869.
