Harijans seek Tk 5,000 monthly allowance for elders

The Harijan community requested the Prime Minister to introduce monthly Taka 5,000 allowance for elderly, divorcee and disabled Harijan citizens.

They also sought stipends for meritorious Harijan students to enable them pursue education.

Leaders of Rangpur unit of ‘Harijan Adhikar Adai Songgathan’(HAAS) placed the demand at a rally at Press Club premises on Wednesday.

President of the organization Suresh Basfor, general secretary Shaju Basfor and other leaders spoke on the occasion.

The speakers said people of Harijan community are engaged in most unhealthy, dirty and risky works like cleaning of roads, offices and dirty rubbishes to keep the city clean.

Many Harijan people die at an early age because of working in unhealthy and risky environments leaving their wives and children in miseries, they said adding that but they are the most neglected segment of the society.

The government should take steps under the social safety net programs to assist elderly Harijan citizens so that they can maintain their lives with minimum facilities, they said.
