Gold worth Tk1.5 crore found inside rice cooker at Ctg airport

Customs officials detained a passenger with 1.8 kilogrammes of gold hidden inside a rice cooker at Shah Amanat International Airport today.

"A passenger named Mohammad Ali, who came via an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah on Friday (22 September), was trying to smuggle 1.7 kilogrammes of raw gold (24 carats) and 100 grams of gold ornaments (22 carats) worth Tk1.5 crore hidden inside a rice cooker," said Ahsan Ullah, deputy commissioner of the Airport Unit of Chattogram Customs House.

The airport customs team and the scanning officials acted on a tip-off and checked Mohammad Ali's luggage thoroughly. The rice cooker was broken and gold was found hidden carefully inside it.

Further legal action is on with regard to the recovered gold, customs officials said.
