Garment workers stage protest in Gazipur, block two highways

Workers from at least 22 garment factories staged protest over due salaries, violating the lockdown on Thursday in Gazipur.

The agitated workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh and the Dhaka-Tangail highways and several other roads.

The industrial police intervened and, on their mediation, authorities of the garment factories assured the factory workers that they will pay their salaries within this month.

After getting assurance from the factory owners, the workers suspended their protest.

Additional Superintendent of Police of the industrial police of Gazipur Arif Raiyan said, "Owners of some factories couldn't pay them for a few complications. Workers from those factories have been protesting for their due payrolls for a few days now."

Owners of the factories tried to pay the employees through online banking. They didn't succeed due to some complications.

Officials of Gazipur industrial police said the garment workers protested demanding due salaries in many places in the district. They have protested several times for their due payrolls before.

Workers from at least 22 garment factories were involved in the protest violating lockdown. They even blocked a few roads including two highways, officials of Gazipur industrial police said.
