A specialised equipment gantry crane for handling containers was damaged at the Chattogram Port when a ship accidentally hit it while docking on Thursday noon.
The accident took place at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of the port.
Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Farooq confirmed the news to The Business Standard.
He said, "The incident took place in front of the NCT-2 when the ship Mount Cameron was being brought to jetty no 5 from the outer anchorage of the Chattogram Port and accidentally hit the crane while taking a turn in front of the terminal."
"As a result, the front part of the gantry crane got damaged. After the incident, senior officials including the chairman of the port authority visited the spot," added Omar Farooq.
Currently, container handling with the damaged crane is currently off. An investigation committee – headed by the port dock master – has been formed to look into the matter.
