The main accused in a gang rape case was killed in what police said was a gunfight with them in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria upazila early on Monday.

The deceased, Jahirul Islam, 20, son of Shafiqul Islam, was a resident of Kairachala village of the upazila.

He was the prime accused in a case filed over the rape of a teenage girl in Mymensingh.

The gun battle took place in the upazila’s Kaladah area.

“Police went to the area upon information that Jahirul was there,” said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch of police in Mymensingh.

“Sensing the presence of law enforcement officials, Jahir and his accomplices opened fire on them, compelling them to fire back. This triggered a gunfight.

“Police took the bullet-hit body of Jahirul to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Police recovered a pipe gun from the scene, and two police officials were injured in the gun battle,” said Akand.

Jahirul’s accomplices, however, fled the scene.

Jahirul and his cohorts raped a teenage girl on Saturday afternoon in a cottage in the Kutira village of the upazila.

On Sunday, the victim filed a rape case with Fulbaria Police Station naming Jahirul as the main accused.
