Fuel depot gutted in Rajshahi

A fuel depot at the main market of Durgapur Upazila headquarter in Rajshahi district was gutted in a devastating fire in the small hours of today.

A youth identified as Khademul Islam, 28, who along with some other locals were trying to extinguish the fire, sustained injuries and was undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Police and locals said some of the adjacent shops, stores and a fuel carrying tank lorry were also burnt in the fire which originated from remains of the cigarette fire.

On information, two fire fighting units from Durgapur and Puthiya Upazila Headquarters rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after around two hours of efforts.

Fire Fighting Team Leader Ashraful Haque said the fire had originated in the depot namely Khadem Enterprise around 1 am when fuel oil was unloading from the tank lorry and spread to the adjacent shops and installations within a few minutes.

The extent of loss on account of fire is yet to be ascertained.

Proprietor of Khadem Enterprise Afsar Ali said there were 50 drums loaded with diesel, kerosene and petrol.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohsin Mridha visited the place of occurrence this morning.
