The Zoological Society of Bangladesh on Thursday conferred Zoology Olympiad 2019 award to four students from graduate and high school levels.
The champions and runners up students were awarded at a prize giving ceremony held at the Department of Zoology auditorium in Dhaka University.
Kawsar Ahmed from Anandamohon College bagged the champion trophy, while Noban Hossain from Rajshahi University became the runner up in the graduate level.
Maruful Islam from Shariatpur Government Technical College became the champion, while Joytimoy from Notre Dame College became the runner up from the high school level.
The Zoological Society of Bangladesh has been organising the Olympiad to focus on the conservation of biodiversity in Bangladesh, recent issues, and to inspire more students into studying Zoology.
The society, with the support of Department of Zoology, conducted the Olympiad this year at ten regions (Dhaka-A, Dhaka-B, Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Cumilla, Rangpur and Chattogram).
Then they selected two students from the university category and two from the college category. A total of 40 students participated in the final competition. Among them, four became winners.
The champions will get certificates, crests and laptops as the prize.
Addressing the programme, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said, "Biodiversity is under threat in Bangladesh due to climate change and other reasons. So, the protection of the biodiversity is now pressing issue in Bangladesh.
"Only a unified effort can conserve the biodiversity. So the government, non-government organisations and other stakeholders will have to take immediate unified measurers to save the biodiversity."
Professor Gulshan Ara Latif, president of Zoological Society of Bangladesh presided over the ceremony, while Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique attended as the chief guest.
Professor Imdadul Hoque, dean of Biology Faculty of Dhaka University and Professor Dr Hamida Khanam of Department of Zoology participated at the event as special guests.
Professor Humayun Reza Khan, Chairman of Department of Zoology, Professor Khan Habibur Rahman, Convener of Zoology Olympiad 2019 and Dr Tapan Kumar Dey, member secretary of Zoology Olympiad 2019 were also present among many others.
