Form committee to set LPG cylinder price: HC

The High Court yesterday asked the authorities concerned in the government to explain why a committee would not be formed to set the maximum retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders after comparing with prices in the international market.
The energy secretary, the chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, and the director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection were directed to inform the court of their initiatives to form the committee within March 1.
After hearing a writ petition, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the rule.
On January 13, Supreme Court lawyer Md Moniruzzaman Linkon filed the writ with the High Court. He also demanded that steps be taken for imprinting the maximum retail price on LPG cylinders.
Linkon stood for the writ petition while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder represented the state.
On January 7, Linkon sent a legal notice to the authorities concerned, urging them to take steps for imprinting the maximum retail price on LPG cylinders.
Linkon said, "As there is no mention of the maximum retail price on the cylinders, private companies raise the price frequently using the excuse of price increases in the international market."
"However, in most cases, local companies store the products and raise prices at will because the government has no official system in place to check LPG cylinder prices," he added.
