Foreign minister congratulates Mamata Banerjee

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has congratulated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as her party- Trinamool Congress - has won a historic victory in the state's assembly elections.

In a letter written to Mamata Banerjee, Foreign Minister said, "The Trinamool Congress has won the mandate of the people for forming the government for the third time in a row, which is a reflection of the continued confidence and trust of the people of West Bengal in your leadership. We are grateful to you because you have embraced the long-cherished values of Bengalis 'religious harmony and brotherhood' and Bangabandhu has played a leading role in this matter all his life."

Dr Momen noted, "Excellent bilateral relations exist between Bangladesh and India, and the potential areas of mutual cooperation between the two countries have expanded in recent years. Undivided history, culture, language, values and hereditary connections have made the relationship between the peoples of the two countries unique and strong. In particular, the people of West Bengal hold a special place in the hearts of Bangladeshis. In this special year of celebrating the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, Mujib Borsho and 50 years of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India, I am gratefully remembering the support and sacrifices of the people of India and the political leadership, including the people of West Bengal."

"We believe that through your commitment and cooperation, the relationship between the two countries will be further strengthened and unresolved issues will be resolved," he said.

Dr Momen further added, "The world is facing unprecedented challenges due to coronavirus. In this context, Bangladesh is committed to exchanging mutual resources and experiences between the two countries and working for the welfare of the people. I firmly believe that all of us together will be freed from this great danger and will soon be able to return to normal life and livelihood."
