The factory owner has kept production running and gathered over 100 workers without taking permission and defying health safety advice

The Narayanganj Sadar upazila administration has fined and sealed off a flavoured drinks factory for defying lockdown and social distancing advice.

Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) Md Azizur Rahman told The Business Standard on Wednesday that Laboni Juice Factory owner had kept operations running despite juice being a non-essential product.

"He gathered over 100 workers at the factory without taking permission and also defying health safety advice.

"Manufacturing of life-saving and essential products is allowed during lockdown with permission from the administration."

On the production floor, the workers did not maintain the government's social distancing advice.

Factory owner Habibur Rahman was fined Tk50,000 and the factory was also sealed off, said Azizur.

The workers were also advised to adopt health protection measures and maintain social distancing.

The upazila administration also found the factory's products, raw materials and labelling inappropriate.

Narayanganj is one of the risky clusters of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
