Fish farming in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara lakes, soon: Mayor Atiq

Fish farming will be started soon in the lakes of Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara of the capital city, says Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam.   

"We are cleaning the lakes, canals and drains regularly. Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara lakes will be made pollution free for fish farming," he said, addressing a fish release event in the capital's Kuril area.

The Department of Fisheries arranged the event on Thursday, marking National Fisheries Week 2022.

After releasing fish fry in Kuril Lake, Mayor Atiqul Islam said, "Fish cannot be bred where there is a high density of mosquitoes and sewage lines from homes go into lakes and canals, causing pollution. This cannot go on any longer."

"Fish farming will be done in all the lakes across the city in phases. I have already discussed it with the fisheries department," he added.

The mayor said a community centre and a playground will soon be built in the area.

He also urged people concerned to ensure that sewage cannot be directly discharged into lakes.

"The city corporation team is doing door to door inspecting sewage lines to ensure proper waste management. Strict action will be taken if sewage lines are found connected with drainage systems or canals," he warned.

Buildings are not allowed to be built by filling water bodies in the city. Water bodies must be protected for future generations, the mayor added.

Atiqul Islam also urged everyone to remain cautious about the rise in dengue cases and take precautions in this regard.

Dhaka District Fisheries Officer BM Mustafa Kamal moderated the programme.

Councillor of Ward 17 of Dhaka North, Md Ishaq Mia, Reserved Women Councillor Hasina Bari Chowdhury, and Dhaka North's Zonal Executive Officer, Zulkar Nain, were also present.
