The government has lowered prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders provided by private operators by Tk2.90 per kilogram to Tk101.62 for the month of August.

A 12kg cylinder will now cost Tk1,219, down from Tk1,254 in July, according to a new tariff announced by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Tuesday.

The same rate will also be applicable for any other size of cylinders sold by private LPG operators.

However, the price of government-owned 12.5kg LPG cylinders remains unchanged at Tk591.

Announcing the new price in a virtual press briefing, BERC Chairman Md Abdul Jalil made the new tariff effective from 6pm yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of auto gas used for motor vehicles has dropped from Tk58.46 per litre to Tk56.85. Also, the price of reticulated LPG has decreased from Tk101.28 per kg to Tk98.38 kg.

Abdul Jalil said the BERC set the new tariff after adjusting the import cost of LPG raw materials – propane and butane – which are imported from the Middle East.

According to sources, the Saudi contract price of propane and butane has dropped to $670 and $660 respectively in August from $725 in July.
