University students to get cheap internet

Students under the network coverage of Teletalk can participate in online classes through the Zoom app by recharging Tk100 per month

State-owned mobile operator Teletalk will provide internet at nominal cost to the public and private university students of the country to help them continue their academic activities online.
Students of all the universities using the Bangladesh Research and Education Network or BdREN platform run by the University Grants Commission will get this facility.
Currently, 42 public and 6 private universities in the country are using the BdREN platform.
Students under the Teletalk network can enjoy this service and participate in online classes through the Zoom app.
This facility can be enabled by recharging Tk100 per month. The recharged money will be deposited to the mobile's original account. This money can also be spent on voice calls and data.
The unused money will be added to the next recharge.
However, this facility cannot be availed if the recharge amount is below Tk100 and if the SIM does not have minimum data.
Earlier, on July 21 BdREN sent a letter to all mobile operators to enable students to use free online education resources. In response to this, Teletalk issued a letter of consent on August 28.
The education minister said measures would be taken within the first week of September to enable students to access digital devices and the internet at a low cost.
Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah said the initiative to continue the online academic activities of the university students during the pandemic is very timely.
