The government has allocated Tk50 crore to the public universities for repairing the residential halls ahead of the much-awaited reopening.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been directed to disburse the amount, Prothom Alo reports quoting Md Mahbub Hossain, secretary to the Secondary and Higher Education Division.

"This allocation is for the universities that have residential halls," said the secretary.

The universities are all set to reopen on 24 May, while the residential halls will reopen on a limited scale on 17 May.

Due to the unprecedented closure, the dormitories have reportedly sustained infrastructural damages.

Meanwhile, UGC Secretary Ferdaus Jaman said they sought an allocation of Tk150 crore for the preparation of reopening. But the authorities granted Tk50 crore.
