The students of Dhaka University have been continuing demonstration for the second consecutive day demanding change of the date to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation polls scheduled for January 30, it is the same day of Saraswati Puja.
The students held a rally on Wednesday at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus. About three hundred students took part in the assembly with different placards, said Utpal Biswas, spokesperson for the protesting students.
Later they started marching towards Election Commission (EC) office at Agargaon, but they were stopped by the police at Shahbagh intersection.
Earlier on Tuesday, hundreds of students from DU blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding rescheduling poll dates of both Dhaka city corporations set to be held on January 30.
The protest began around 5pm Tuesday, just three hours after the High Court turned down a writ petition seeking its directive to defer the elections of the two Dhaka city corporations as it coincides with the Saraswati Puja of the Hindu community.
Earlier the EC announced on December 22, 2019 that the elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation would be held on January 30 in 2020.
