As the second wave of Covid-19 infections is wreaking havoc in the country, the MBBS admission test for the 2021-22 academic session is taking place today (Friday) at 10 am in compliance with health guidelines.

Some 1,22,874 students are going to sit for the examination at 55 venues across the country for 4,350 seats in 47 government medical colleges.

All examinees, invigilators and other officials have to strictly follow the health guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health.

Four police personnel led by a magistrate will be deployed for each venue.

In addition, the entrances to the test centres will be equipped with thermal scanners, disinfectant auto spray machines and hand sanitisers to measure the temperature.

To hold the examinations smoothly and prevent virus transmission, the medical education directorate will not allow anyone to enter the exam centres without wearing facemasks, with high temperature and other symptoms of Covid-19.

Examinees will have to keep a distance of at least 4 feet from one another at exam halls and on average 30 students will be accommodated in a room to avert transmission of the virus during exam hours.

It was seen from the spot that the set of rules reportedly were not being followed in Chattogram as students and guardians flocked around the exam centres as early as 7 am creating gridlocks in several important sections of the city.

Abu Yusuf, a local businessman who came to the Kazem Ali School and College centre with his examinee daughter, told The Business Standard, "There is no initiative to follow the hygiene rules here."

In Bangladesh, the highest 6,469 coronavirus positive cases were registered in the past 24 hours, while the number of daily fatalities from the virus was recorded at 59 – the highest since March 2020.

On 8 February, the Directorate General of Medical Education published the admission notification for MBBS and BDS courses.

According to the issued notice, the admission test for BDS courses is to be taken on 30 April.
