Japan grants funds for the education of visually impaired persons

Japan has extended a grant worth $87,350 to the Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization (Berdo) of Bangladesh.
In this respect, Ito Naoki, Japanese ambassador in Dhaka signed grant contracts for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) with Md Saidul Huq, executive director of Berdo, at the Embassy of Japan in the capital, read a media statement issued on Monday.
Berdo was awarded the grant for a project titled "The Project for Procurement of Braille Press and Training to Promote Education of Persons with Visual Impairments in Dhaka District."
Berdo has been working for a long time with persons with disabilities.
It has been working to promote the education of visually impaired persons using the braille method, to mobilise and sensitise communities, and to develop skilled manpower in different trades.
With the assistance of Japanese funding, Berdo is due to procure and install a Braille Press, and provide technical guidance on operating the machine, to contribute to the self-reliance and livelihood improvement of people with visual impairments.
The students of the Berdo Blind School and Berdo Library members, as well as persons with visual impairments, nationwide, will be able to access Braille books and textbooks through this project.
