DU observes Flag Hoisting Day
The Dhaka University (DU) authority on Tuesday observed the historic 'Flag Hoisting Day' on the campus in a befitting manner.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman hoisted the national flag while the teachers and students of the Music department performed the national anthem, said a press release.
DU Arts Faculty Dean and the coordinator of the program, Prof Abu Md Delwar Hossain delivered the welcome address.
In his speech, DU VC paid homage to the immortal memory of all the martyrs including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"March is the month of our great freedom, sovereignty and glory. Many historical events have taken place in this month of March, including the first flag hoisting on 2 March, the historic speech of Bangabandhu on 7 March and the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu on 26 March," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that the historic event of hoisting the flag at Dhaka University on 2 March 1971 served as a signal of the formation of our independent and sovereign nation.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, DU Teachers Association General Secretary Prof Md Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, deans of different faculties, provosts of different halls, chairmen of different departments, proctors and leaders of various associations of the university were present at the event.
On March 2, 1971, independent Bangladesh's first national flag, with a yellow map of Bangladesh inside a red disc in a green ambience, was hoisted amid cheers from the students at a massive gathering on the DU campus.
The then Vice-President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) ASM Abdur Rab hoisted the flag on behalf of Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad at the historic Bottala premises.
