Dhaka University Statistics Alumni to honour Prof Ataharul Islam
The Dhaka University Statistics Department Alumni Association (DUSDAA) is set to honour M Ataharul Islam – a former student of the department and a prominent academic – with its highest award, the DUSDAA Outstanding Leadership Award.
In his four decades of a teaching career, Professor Ataharul Islam has taught at various renowned universities around the world, including the East West Center of the University of Hawaii, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, United States.
He also has rendered services at the University Sains Malaysia, the King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, the University of Dhaka, the University of Chittagong, and the East West University in Bangladesh, read a press statement issued by DUSDAA on Friday.

He has supervised many postgraduate and doctoral students. The path shown by him has set the trend of research in the Department of Statistics of the University of Dhaka, the result of which is evident from the outstanding success of the students of this department at home and abroad.
In addition to more than two hundred research articles in international journals, he has written numerous book chapters. He has five books to his credit, all published abroad.
Professor Islam became the inaugural Kazi Motahar Hossain Professor at the Institute of Statistical Research and Training of the University of Dhaka.
Apart from the University of Dhaka, he has played a significant role in the development of the statistics curriculum of many universities in the country, and abroad, as well as policy analysis for various governmental and non-governmental organisations and development partners.
He has won many national and international awards, including the University Grants Commission Award, the Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal and the East West Center Award.
The formal award giving ceremony will be held on 26 November. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony will be held virtually, the press statement read.
The Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will be the chief guest and former Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Kazi Saleh Ahmed will be the special guests at the event.
