Buet forms “Vigilant Teams” to protect freshers from ragging

The authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has formed high-level vigilance teams to prevent senior students from ragging the freshers.

In an official notice, Buet said, "If any student of Buet faces ragging or similar kind of misbehavior, strict action will be taken against the accused according to the university regulation. The punishment can go up to permanent suspension from the university."

Confirming the matter, Director of Students' Welfare (DSW) of Buet Professor Mizanur Rahmah told The Business Standard that a total of four committees have been formed with DSW as convener.

The provosts and assistant provosts of all the halls will act as member of the committees. The committees will start working from February 22.

The team will be available 24x7 on the campus. Immediate punishment will be given upon receiving any complaint on the basis of evidence. The authorities have requested the students to assist in this matter any way possible.

On this matter, a Buet student named Asif Shahriyar Sushmit said, "These initiatives didn't work for a long time due to various factors. I hope the administration will be able to work independently as there is no political pressure anymore. But if they had done it earlier, Abrar wouldn't have to die."

Earlier on 7 October 2019, a second year student of CSE department Abrar Fahad was brutally beaten to death after being physically tortured for several hours at the Sher-E-Bangla Hall of Buet. It was a result of continuous ragging culture, patronised by the students of Chhatra League on the campus.
