Students of seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges staged a protest demanding immediate reopening of the halls and campus in compliance with the Covid-19 health guidelines.

More than fifty students gathered at the intersection in Nilkhet around 11:30 am on Tuesday.

Tanvir Hossain, a protesting student of Kabi Nazrul Government College, said that the nation is being driven towards incompetence as the educational institutions have been closed for 15 months.

"Everything is functioning, including the mills, trade, public transport, garments, and shopping malls in the country, but the educational institutions," he said asking, "Whose interest is being served this way?"

Eden College student Sumi Akhter said, "Students have become addicted to games and drugs due to the long closure of educational institutions. Some have become frustrated and are committing suicide. Moreover, child marriage in the country is on the rise."

The protesting students announced that they will again block the roads in a demonstration on 3 June at 11 am.

All educational institutions have been closed since March 2020 when the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic hit the country.
