A Dhaka court on Thursday awarded two persons, including an assistant sub-inspector of police, two-year imprisonment each for snatching $18,800 (Tk15 lakh).

The court also fined awardees ASI Alamgir Hosain and Masim Billah Tk5,000 each, in default to suffer one month more in jail.

Debdas Chandra Audhikari, metropolitan magistrate of Speedy Trial Tribbunel-3, passed the order.

According to the case statement, on April 4, Elias Ali, owner of HS Money Exchange office, was waiting in front of Rajlokkhi Market of Uttara. Suddenly, a private car came and picked him up into their car, introducing themselves as members of Detective Branch of police.

When Elias started screaming, locals stopped the car and caught Masum Billah. But others managed to flee.

Later, Elias Ali filed a case accusing six people.

During an interrogation on remand, Masum admitted to the involvement of ASI Alamgir Hossain, Habib Doller, Rashed, Suman and Sajal in the snatching.

DB Police Sub-Inspector Nure Alam submitted a charge sheet against ASI Alamgir Hossain and Masum Billah after an investigation. The charges were framed in June, 2017.

The court testified a total of 10 witnesses out of 16.
