Dhaka North City Corporation initiated a campaign of evicting illegal billboards today as per an earlier declaration.
The drive simultaneously started at three DNCC locations. Mayor Atiqul Islam joined the campaign at Gulshan 2 around 10am.
About 150 illegal signboards and billboards were removed from Gulshan 2 area under the leadership of Chief Revenue Officer and Executive Magistrate Abdul Hamid Miah.
At Banani 11, the drive was carried out under the leadership of Zone-7 Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Motakabbir Ahmed.
About 100 signboards and billboards were removed during the drive. He also imposed a fine of Tk70,000 on several companies for illegally occupying roads and sidewalks and obstructing the movement of people.
Meanwhile, 52 signboards and billboards were removed from Pragati Sarani under the direction of Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Sajia Afrin.
Besides, illegally placed goods on footpaths and roads were sold at auction at a price of Tk66,700 and a fine of Tk44,000 was imposed in nine cases.
During the campaign, mayor Atiqul applauded a businessman for taking DNCC's approval before setting up a signboard in the size prescribed by the corporation.
He also thanked an official from the Janata Bank for submitting the prescribed fee to put up a signboard at their Gulshan branch.
"It cannot be tolerated that you will do branding and run business in this city but you would not pay taxes," the mayor said.
Atiqul also requested the city dwellers to let the DNCC know if any business unlawfully leaves construction materials on the sidewalk and the roads.
The mayor stated that to create a beautiful city, businesses need to pay taxes to the city corporation properly.
Urging everyone to follow the city corporation's rules before putting up any signboards around the city, the mayor said, "There are existing regulations that need to be followed before placing billboards and signboards."
He also added that the campaigns to evict illegal billboards and signboards alongside the removal of illegal goods kept on footpaths and roads will continue.
In the last three days, many organisations received permission from the DNCC to install signboards and billboards by depositing about Tk1 crore.
