DNCC evicts illegal establishments from parks, playgrounds

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has evicted illegal establishments from five parks and playgrounds.

The modernisation of these five parks and playgrounds was hampered by illegal occupation for a long time, which was also covered by various print and electronic media.

The parks and playgrounds are Banani Puja Ground, Banani C Block Park, Mohammadpur Triangle Park, Shia Mosque Park and Mohammadpur Udayachal Park, reads a press release issued by the DNCC.

On September 28, DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam announced the eviction of all illegal occupations of parks and playgrounds by October 3. He was speaking at an event titled "Parampara" organised by the DNCC at Gulshan Shahabuddin Ahmed Park on the occasion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 74th birthday.

At Banani Puja ground, a political party illegally set up its office whereas at Banani C Block Park, an abandoned substation and office room of the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Desco), and a guard shed of Banani Society were illegally set up.

Besides, an office of a political party, a rickshaw garage and a nursery were illegally set up in Mohammadpur Triangle Park. A clubhouse, tong shop, and rickshaw garage were illegally set up in Shia Mosque Park.

There is an illegal clubhouse and players' quarter in Mohammadpur Udayachal Park. The DNCC planned to conduct an eviction drive in the park on Saturday, however, being informed about the eviction drive, the illegal occupants have already removed 85% of illegal structures themselves.

Executive magistrate and regional executive officer of Zone-5 Md Masud Hossain led the eviction drive in Mohammadpur and Lalmatia. He said the drive would continue.

In Banani, DNCC audit officer and executive magistrate Md Nasir Uddin Mahmud conducted the eviction drive.
