DNCC evict illegal shops from Manik Mia Avenue bicycle lane

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Sunday launched a drive in Manik Mia Avenue in the capital to evict illegal establishments, floating shops and illegally parked vehicles from the newly constructed bicycle lane.

Masud Hossain, Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate, Mohakhali Region (Region-3) of DNCC led the drive to clear the bicycle lanes on both sides of Manik Mia Avenue from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, said a press release. 

Who is the new cycle lane on Manik Mia for?

During the drive, drivers of two cars were fined a total of Tk 2,500 for illegal parking. In addition, over 100 illegal shops were evicted. Five people were fined a total of Tk 600 for not wearing masks properly during the operation.

Separate cycle lanes have been a long-standing demand of bikers in the country. In October 2019, the country's first such lane was inaugurated in Agargaon. The Manik Mia one is the capital's second dedicated cycle lane. The lanes have been marked green with white cycle icons on both sides of the 0.99km road, starting from the intersection opposite Lalmatia Aarong to Khamarbari.
