Tangail municipality councilor sued for beating up people

Councilor Aminur Rahman Amin of Tangail municipality was sued for allegedly beating up the general people in the municipal town a few days ago amid the ongoing nationwide Coronavirus shutdown.

JR Khan Robin, a Supreme Court lawyer, on Monday, filed a complaint online with the Sadar police station against the councilor of ward no.12 of the municipality.

Officer in Charge Mir Mosharraf Hossain of the police station accepted it, the Supreme Court lawyer said.

OC Mosharraf Hossain told reporters that legal action will be taken after an investigation into the allegation.

Earlier on April 7, a video of Tangail councilor Aminur went viral on social media. The video immediately drew huge criticism. In the video, Aminur along with his supporters was seen beating up people with sticks in the market area without asking them anything.

Amid criticism, the councilor apologized to the people. He explained that as people in Tangail were wandering around in different places unnecessarily, he has taken action.

Later on April 9, lawyer JR Khan Robin sent a legal notice to the Inspector General of Police, Superintendent of Tangail Police, OC of Tangail Sadar Police Station and mayor of Tangail municipality via email to take action against Aminur Rahman Amin.

The notice reads as a public representative, the councilor committed a criminal offense by beating up people instead of convincing them to stay home to protect themselves from Covid-19 infection.

As the locals do not dare to complain against him after being tortured so he sent this notice as a conscious citizen, the plaintiff added.

As authorities concerned did not take any action, he filed a complaint against Amin at the Tanga Sadar Police Station, JR Khan Robin said.
